 Overview - How Florida Fire Service certification exams are processed and given

Submit your application on-line. Upon approval, you will be directed to contact PearsonVue to arrange a test date, time and location that fits your schedule and pay the testing fee. On the test date you selected, you will go to the testing center and take your test. You will leave the center with the results of your exam. Promissor will electronically report the results to the Bureau. The results will appear on your record within about 3 days. If you passed, your certificate should arrive about 2 weeks later. If you failed, you will leave the testing center with information about your options depending upon the certification exam taken.

Certification Tests given via PearsonVue

All written tests are delivered via Promissor except;

Firefighter I – Firefighter I tests will continue to be given by Field Evaluators around the state. The test will be given in conjunction with Firefighter II exams given at Training Centers around the state.

Firefighter II Written test – Firefighter II written tests given at training centers at the end of the course will continue to be delivered as is current practice.

Firefighter II Equivalency, Practical Retension and Practical retests – These Firefighter II tests will continue to be delivered quarterly as scheduled at the FireCollege.

Certifications Not Requiring a Test and Renewal Applications

Fire Officer 2, Firesafety Inspector 2, Investigator 2, Instructor III, Single Course Exemption Instructor and such will continue to be processed as is current practice.

Certification Application Processing Costs

Certification tests that are given via Promissor – A $30 testing fee will be paid to Promissor on-line as part of the test registration process. This test fee will apply for each test and retest you register for through Promissor.

Certification application processes that do not involve Promissor - Certification tests, Practical retests, Practical Retension tests, Renewals, Firefighter II Equivalency, certifications not requiring a written test and not delivered via Promissor will have an application fee as is current practice.

Pro-Board Status

THIS WILL ONLY AFFECT CLASSES STARTING AFTER OCTOBER 1, 2010.

 The Florida Certification program is not changing; however, the opportunity to receive international recognition for Florida credentials is being enhanced. The continuation and expansion of the Pro‐Board accreditation process provides the possibility for the comparison of your Florida certifications throughout the nation and around the world. To receive a Pro‐Board application the candidate must demonstrate practical (skills) competencies. The Bureau feels that this will be beneficial; skills assessment documentation will be required for classes that start after October 1, 2010. The method the candidate uses is determined by the training center or school and the student. Students will be able to complete those skills associated with the class during the instructional period. Skills must be evaluated by an independent examiner (certified instructor other than the one teaching the class), or in the format of a task book signed off by the chief of the department or other senior officers that witnessed the skills. Applicants may choose to use a combination of both methods.

Pro-Board applications will continue to be distributed upon successful completion of the training program and the certification examination.

Again, Florida certification requirements have not changed.

Below is a list of the certifications and the different options that will be available. Please note that option 2 is almost identical to the original certification process adding only the skills verification.
